Selwyn Rees
It is with great sadness that I must announce the passing away of Selwyn at 5:30pm Wednesday evening on the 3rd of March 2010.
He fought a heroic battle against prostate cancer while managing to live life to the full despite his debilitating disease. His death in the presence of his family was comfortable, quick and peaceful. He will be sadly missed by us all.
Selwyn was brought up in Deeside and played cricket for Connah’s Quay. After college he moved to the Isle of Anglesey and joined his works side Anglesey Aluminium in the mid 70’s.
At the beginning of the 90’s the island’s 14 senior cricket teams dropped to 4. Selwyn realized that cricket would only survive through a strong Anglesey Coaching Association helping develop juniors. Selwyn set up the Association and continued to run it almost single handed.
A serious chest problem forced Selwyn to take early retirement in the mid-90’s but he worked tirelessly to establish a group of coaches for this club’s four junior teams and parent groups to obtain an artificial strip, nets, covers, sight screens, grass cutting equipment and an IT room using the latest coaching software.
Selwyn organised winder open coaching sessions in Holyhead and these attracted over 60 children each week. He organised sessions at several of the island’s primary and secondary schools. He also organised a Kwik Cricket festival for the island.
Early in 2008 Selwyn was diagnosed with having a cancer return but this did not dim his enthusiastic love of cricket and in spite of the heavy treatment programme Selwyn continued to inspire hundreds of youngsters.
Are thoughts and condolences are with his family.
